Suggestions for admins
Can you give us any insight on the future of other parts of this site (if you're planning/working on them)?

I was asking mainly about the other categories when you go to the techrabbi.com home page. I was curious if those other categories are going to be used. It'd be kinda cool if the blogs section was kinda a place where each user could post their own or add to a tech blog, kinda like a "column" sorta. I don't know, something along that line would be pretty cool. The forums are very cool though Definitely would still be the highlight of the site.

And maybe the training section could be/have some sort of wiki of how-tos that people have slowly put together and added to. for instance, say you just finished doing some networking in your house, and you came across some problems along the way. You go to this training section, and make a section about networking, and write a short synopsis of what you did, and make a common problems section at the bottom, and throw in the issues you've had. Say then someone else finds a really good step-by-step article on how to network stuff. They could then go to the article about networking, and add a link to this story, and give a brief synopsis of it. Another person who is having issues with it could go to this training section, and notice under the common problems that say byerspc had the same issue he's having, and fixed it by doing "X"
I don't know, just a few ideas to throw out there, I happen to go to click a bookmark that led to the homepage rather than the forum itself, and started thinking about the other stuff that says "coming soon."

funny how "coming soon" never is soon enough. when i setup this site last year, i had grand ideas of what i wanted to do with all of my sites to keep them up-to-date and usefull. unfortunately, after i got the ball rolling, i ran out of time. i am slowly getting into a more regular schedule and hope to finalize some of these things within the next month.

here is a rundown of the plans for the other sections of the site.
blogs: rss headlines from all blogs in the techrabbi network as well as an updated list of favorite technology blogs.
headlines: a dated list of headlines that the techrabbi community finds important or interesting as well as the current headlines from digg, slahsdot, and the googleblog
training: short video how-tos from the techrabbi admins. others are free to submit their own videos, but they must be approved before they are published.

Oh no rush, I was only curious if there were plans for them or not. I just happened to go to the main homepage recently and curiosity hit me. Life's pretty crazy, especially during school.

I agree with Caleb that you dont need to rush but maybe our class can do some of the work on the website for you when we learn it.

The wordpress engine (I love it, use it for my blog) has something called wordpress Multi-User (MU- http://mu.wordpress.org). Basically it would allow for my above suggestion about people having their separate page for tech-related blogging. So for example you would have "byerspc.blog.techrabbi.com" and the same for everyone else who was interested. (http://forum.techrabbi.com/topic.asp?COMMAND=GOTOLAST&TID=97#422) with just a simple install of wordpress. Read about it when you get a chance, and if it's something that sounds like it would be cool, I'll install a test version on my site in a subdirectory and you can check it out. It's quite simple, and the time required to set this up is simply the time of uploading all the files to the directory you want.

here's an faq about it: http://mu.wordpress.org/faq
it's got some info about it. users would manage their blog on their own, including choosing their themes and plugins if they wanted one. The admin of the site can also make across-the-board decisions if wanted/needed.

I don't know, just saw this recently and thought it would be pretty cool, and the wordpress engine is great, and it looks like it would be almost no work beyond uploading and activating- no coding necessary. If this interests you (speaking to the techrabbi), let me know, and I'll install a test version somewhere and you can see it for yourself.

thanks for the suggestions. . .and keep them coming.

even though it sounds really cool, i'd rather keep everyone's individual blog separate for now. i can still setup subdomains to people's blogs (i.e. i could point caleb.techrabbi.com to your blog). . .and i am interested in getting more people collaborating here, but i don't want full responsibility for server timeouts etc. and the nature of blogs are more individualistic than i would want to take responsibility for.

if all goes well, your blog posts will show up in the blog page of techrabbi and you will also be able to direct people to great headlines and tutorials.

Oh that's cool, I didn't think about that. How do you change the name of a thread? I'd change it to a "suggestions" thread, but I don't see how, does such an option exist?

researcher is awarded to members that show that they have studied a topic or series of topics and have contributed to the community.
