http://www.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/notebooks?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

here's a side-by-side of all that dell offers. the cheapest your gonna get is starting at 499 (although shop around, you could probably find a good deal, there are sales all the time), and the 499 laptop has a celeron processor and only 256 meg of ram, which pretty much rules all games out that have been made in the last 2-3 years if that doesn't bug you. for 599 though you can get a pretty decent laptop w/ a core2 duo, and 512 meg of ram. If you can swing it that might not be a bad deal. I gotta start my schoolwork now but I'll check a few other websites when I get some freetime. Both those computers also come with a free vista upgrade coupon (make sure you check the box when you customize a laptop, by default they unchecked it), for $10 shipping and handling.

@derek, free vista upgrade coupons are available now, so keep an eye out for good deals.

You have a couple options I think (get the really cheap dells that will be coming out in a month or two) or you need to find a used one (sometimes hard to get).

You may want to email my brother. I was talking to him this past weekend and he is buying a new gaming laptop and will be getting rid of one of his. He is having the screen replaced on it and then he was going to sell it. It is only a year old. Averatec 12 inch -- would be good enough for AOE and and school stuff.

BTW Dell is coming out with an AMD laptop that will be about 400 in time for Christmas

You may want to look at Tiger Direct and an Acer (built better than the cheap dells) or Overstock and get a refurb.

You know that if you wait until the Friday before Thanksgiving someone will have a really cheap laptop too.

What is your brothers email address? and how much is he going to be selling it for? and what specs does it have? I dont know if I want a refurbished computer because it probably will have many problems in the future. I will wait a little bit and continue to look for good deals thanks for your help. micahbyers@gmail.com I think about 200 or 300
Has a cd burner dvd player, 512 mb ram, 60 gig hd, amd processor (not sure what speed), He bought the extended warranty on it -- not sure how much is left so you would have to ask him.

Tell him how you heard about it and he may give you a good deal :-)

One thing to remember is a refurb of a good laptop like a thinkpad will hold up better than the cheapies.
Just ask Mr. Sherf about how well his dell has held up :-)

Another good site to check out is geeks.com
