DVD converting
I might have asked this before but I was wondering if there are any recommended, free software that can convert movies so that I can store them on an external hard drive because my DVD discs are getting messed up.

I tried handbrake. It pulls in the titles and chapters. I gave a location for it but when it is done the file either doesn't work with any player (vlc, QuickTime, windows media) or it plays but the sound and picture is messed up. I think it is something with my settings but i don't know what it is.

Yes, I have had on and off success with bitripper. I have had one come out fine. One came out with the audio being of sync with the video. Others have made the program crash after getting to about 80%. I have one that got frozen on 40%.

Is there any other suggestions? I have about 200 movies to do.

yeah handbrake can be a little crazy...especially the non mac version...you generally have to be careful which file you pick etc in order for it to work...some DVDs scramble the data so it is almost impossible to get the movie in the correct order (princess and the frog) did that to me.

I am having no success with any of these DVD converters. Are there any other suggestions? Or maybe someone can define what settings I set for converting that could help. I might even consider some low cost software to do this.

What are you trying to play them with? After you rip them?
