WEP
We are changing our network and we are going to allow it to go wireless but we need to protect it from outside users. I went into the settings and allowed enabled WEP 128 mb because that is the best my network box allows. I put in a passphrase. When we try to connect it says security is enabled and then it asks for a passphrase. We put the correct phrase in for the WEP and it declined it so then I put in the network password and it allowed my computer to connect to the network but with limited connectivity. It wouldn't allow us to connect to the internet. So, then I just removed WEP to see what is going on and I could access the network without a password and also get get the internet. I think WEP is blocking the internet from our computers.

Does anyone know what is going on? or how to get it to work?

make sure all of your devices are set to the same version of wep. . .but since wep is next to useless, you may want to see if there is a firmware upgrade for your router that allow for wpa.

Well, I looked up the firmware for my product and I tried to download it but it is downloading into a file that I have no program or utility to run the program.

I hate networking! I need to take a class on it!!!!

yeah, save the file on your hard drive and then open up your router utility and point the firmware upgrade to the file. it will do the rest. you should do this with a computer that is hard wired to the router (not through wireless).

Alright, time for the over/under game. Over/under 50% chance that Micah accidentally bricks his router while trying to update the firmware.

I will have to try it out.

Mr. Byers, I have never done much with networking so it is harder for me then for someone that already knows all about it. (Just remember I am still learning)

For your information Caleb. I didn't "brick" my router.

I installed the firmware and protected the network in less than 2 minutes. So, I would have to say I did pretty well for doing it for the first time.
