Protection for computers
Does anyone know of a good free software that protects against viruses? I already have avg and it is not going to be free anymore.

That'
s actually not true, believe it or not:

I think they want you to think that so you will upgrade. I am considering moving away from AVG though because of all this mess. Basically they upgraded their free version to the 7.5 version, but since they want to make money, they have a paid version with anti-spyware and a firewall, which is kinda redundant since most likely you'
re behind a router (firewall), and even if you'
re not, if you'
re XP SP2, you have a firewall. For anti-spyware, I'
m sure Spybot SD and Windows Defender would do better anyway.
As for an alternative, I'
ve heard many people say they think a program called Nod32 (just google it, don'
t know the website) is better. I haven'
t actually tried it, but I'
ve heard it'
s a bit more technical than AVG, but many seem to think it'
s a touch better. I'
m not going to switch unless AVG gives me more reason too, but it'
s a solid alternative.

Nod32 costs money though...Caleb is right. I got the message today and downloaded the 7.5 version for free...it is just kind of hidden

So AVG is just trying to get you to upgrade and it is techinally free. Thanks for the help!

I installed 7.5 and all the sudden it said that my registry was corrupt and that i needed to renew the license. I went to my e-mail account and couldn'
t find any license info like they said. So, I went through and uninstalled it. It didn'
t completely remove it from my system so I went into the program files and completely removed it, so I thought. I then downloaded a fresh copy from CNET and it still says that I have an old copy of AVG on there. Any ideas how to get that off my system completely because I don'
t have any other anti-virus.

bad idea to hack at it to try and remove. If anything you should have tried restarting before installing. You can do a registry search for it and delete from that but be careful...start run regedit.

jdog. . .this sounds like the beginning of the end for you. . . especially since you installed that anti-spyware software that toasted my system.
another free alternative that i have heard works better than avg is
antivir

Avast is what PCMAG rates pretty well...free as well. My brother put it on my aunt'
s machine...it is ok. I think AVG is still the best of course not antivirus on my mac :-)
