The cost of players are way down $50 or so for a pretty good one. Red box rents blu-rays for $1.50 and you can buy a blu-ray DVD/digital combo for pretty good prices for movies you want to own.
I am still a big fan of the quality of blu-ray for blockbuster movies otherwise we rely on itunes/apple tv to stream a lot of what we own.

Exactly. 6 years ago it was proclaimed dead and yet it seems to still be a large part of the market. i still see advantages to owning a disc, but we occasionally buy stuff off of amazon and our kids watch netflix mostly.
