an ad-hoc network is a computer to computer network. this type of network wouldn't include a router, switch, or hub.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad-hoc

I am not sure it would be used for wired. It is difficult to directly wire two wired computers. you can't use a regular network cable it has to be a special one and I am not sure if that is called ad hoc or not....generally you see it with wireless ones and you generally want to avoid them.

Do you make your own cat5 cables? It's pretty easy to make a crossover cable if you do.

I have made them...I don't like making them...even when I run wires ...I always run them too long....long story.

Most the time when you see adhoc it is cause someone else's laptop is trying to get a a connection or is hosting a connection. You avoid them unless that is actually what you are looking for. Generally speaking you are looking for a regular access point for wifi to the internet not a direct connection to another laptop.

The crossover cable can work but you are then limited to just the two computers...switches make a lot more sense. The only time I have seen people do the crossover thing is if they have dialup to share the internet connection but even then a switch would do the job.

This was brought up on the real deal this week on cnet, i believe.
